Don’t Use “Count Me In” for Little League Registrations

Order the Secret to U.S. Immigration Today!

Apparently a firm called “Count Me In” that processes online Little League and other youth sports league registrations has been keeping all the money it is processing! SCUMBAGS! This is sick, sick, sick, but I guess the old adage, “desperate people do desperate things” applies here. As always, when you are hiring an outside organization, make sure to check their credentials and don’t give them full control of your funds EVER! These funds could have easily been processed through the league’s bank account rather than the companies no matter what the company said.

We sell advertising for leagues and all checks are made payable to the league! Upon delivery of the funds, the league cuts us a check. That way our hands are NEVER on the funds. We do collect money for our non-profit Youth Sports Support Group, but those funds are tracked and we have to file reports with the IRS, etc. There is no reason for any league to ever have their money in somebody else’s hands. Shame on Count Me In and shame on the league’s board for taking the easy way out. There are numerous online registration firms out there that use your bank to process the payments.

    My Life Just Changed Forever

Today I submitted paperwork to the Florida Division of Corporations that I am sure will change my life forever. I feel that the culmination of everything I have done in my life to this point has led me to this. Today I submitted paperwork thereby officially forming the “Youth Sports Support Group”.

What is the Youth Sports Support Group (YSSG) you ask? It is the path my life has told me to take. The YSSG is a not-for-profit organization that will raise funds in the community to support local sports programs and allow kids that may not otherwise be able to participate, play the sport of their choice.

It is not about baseball, basketball, football, soccer, of whatever sport a child may chose, it is about getting them into an organized competitive environment and allowing them to thrive. The mission statement for the YSSG is:

“Give every child the opportunity to build character through sport”

All my life I have searched for something to truly be passionate about. Those that know me well know that I can move a nation when I am excited about something, I feel this project may consume the remainder of my life. What do I see it doing?

-Provide “scholarships” to those unable to pay league registration dues
-Provide new equipment to leagues so kids can have the best to play with
-Marry leagues with sponsors for teams, signage, and various sponsorship opportunities
    -Provide funding for facility upgrades
-Manage and run fund-raising activities for leagues with little to no manpower
-Staff concession stands to increase funds collected during activities
-Any other activity that benefits the kids of the world through sport

I have to admit as I write this post I am very nervous about this life decision. I know I will face many skeptics, some of them in my own home, but I believe this is what I am supposed to be doing. My players all know that when they are nervous I tell them that is “God’s way of telling them they are about to do something important and exciting”.

It sounds good when I say it to them, but to me it simply leaves a lump in my throat! I believe I can make a difference in the lives of so many children if I employ my strategies properly. Hopefully my plans are sound and my decisions are solid.

Today, I begin a new journey. I will keep you posted on the progress here. If you wish to make a contribution you may donate by clicking the button below:

Thank you for your generous contribution and please pray for the success of the organization.

Volunteers, You Have to Ask Them

I was in a situation today that had nothing to do with Little League where I overheard a hard working individual complaining that nobody was stepping up to help him. He was complaining that he had to do everything and that nobody had volunteered to help.

    My response? Did you ask?

I am so often amazed when people complain they are getting no help but they never ask anyone to help them? My experience has been, if you ask, people will help. If you wait for someone to volunteer, you might get lucky, but likely you will do everything yourself.

A good example of this is how we do our concessions assignments. We used to give a list of assignments to each team. The team was responsible for filling them. This usually meant they weren’t filled or the team mom did every slot. There were exceptions, but very few.

We decided to try something different a few years back and it paid off this year with record profits! Enough to build a batting cage on our softball fields! Instead of waiting for others to volunteer, we made a schedule that included one slot from every parent in the league. We made sure not to have conflicts w/ other teams and wherever possible, assigned parents that already had practices scheduled at the fields.

Our participation shot through the roof! Rather than ask for someone to volunteer, we assigned a spot to them. Most people showed, some swapped, and a very few didn’t show. This is much better than our normal response across the league and we are very happy with the system.

The moral of the story? Don’t assume people will help, ask them, because if you ask, they will. Who could say no when they know they should be doing it? Don’t ask? Easy for me to avoid you, ask me, I have to say yes.

    How do you recruit volunteers?

    Power in Numbers

Today I had the great pleasure of attending a city council meeting! Yippee!!! After no less than 3 hours of intense (yawn) discussion about drain pipes and shingles it was time to renew the horrid Little League land use agreement.

OK, that’s what we thought anyway. When we got there, the councilmen had to get there expressed "concerns" and "problems" in. But it was all lip service! The agreement passed 5-0 w/ no changes!

Why? I think the answer is obvious. 300 kids = 600 or so parents/grandparents etc. The votes in the city election were in the low thousands at best, maybe even hundreds. Can there be a bigger lobbying group than the local Little League?

I will never forget the time, when I still lived in VA, they were debating whether to build a huge sports complex or a pristine park. The park contingent showed up w/ about 10 or so honorable representatives. The local soccer and baseball league got together and showed up w/ about ohhhh 200????….lol

We were last on the agenda, immediately moved to 1st! Passed w/ almost NO debate . The power of the local sports leagues in incredible .
