Ladies, Men Love Boots!
Hey ladies, men are suckers for boots. You know it, we know it, women look good in boots. Nancy Sinatra immortalized boots in her hit single “boots are made for walking” and of course, Dave Mustaine introduced my generation to the song remixing it with Megadeth. My wife used to wear the little high healed short elf boots, she had 4 or 5 pairs all different colors and styles!
Thank goodness there was no zappos.com women’s boots back then! I would have gone broke! She certainly would have been shopping there every day.
Zappos has the finest selection in women’s boots available. Casual boots, dress boots, above the ankle, bootie, rain, high heel, you name it, they sell it!
If you are looking for women’s boots, or if you are looking to surprise your wife or girlfriend, zappos is the place to go!

Tryouts Tonight!
We had our first round of tryouts tonight and everything went great! One thing I noticed was how well schooled the kids were. We have been blessed with very good coaching across the board and it shows in the mid-range age 8-11 year old players. There were no kids, other than the brand new ones, that weren’t fairly fundamentally sound.
The other part of the equation was that they actually performed those fundamentals properly! This just goes to show that they are learning them and capable of performing them when “in the spotlight”. It is important to make sure they understand they are in the spotlight every time they field a ball be it practice, a game, or in the back yard. Fundamentally sound players will excel more often than not.
Travel practice tomorrow, then final round of tryouts on Thursday!

My Grandfather’s Grandfather Clock
I have always loved grandfather clocks. As a child I remember the one that sat in our living room. It was built by Dee-Daddy, my grandfather, in his wood shop. Every hour on the hour it would chime and ever so often we had to go in and wind it up. It had a big heavy pendulum and the effort he put into the detail showed the love he had for our family.
Today I discovered this Grandfather Clock online and it reminded me of home. My father passed just after Christmas last year so I have been thinking of him a lot lately. This clock resembles the one we had so it got me thinking of home again.
All this reminising got me thinking about how cool grandfather clocks are and I came across this blog post about shopping for grandfather clocks w/ your grandfather. It said some of the same things I felt about the subject, my grandfather had to love the things because he made one for each of his children and then a few more after that, never for sale though.
It seems that all of these sites are tied together and part of 1-800-4CLOCKS.com. It is a great site with everything clocks. Did you know that they have atomic grandfather clocks now? That’s progress! No more winding! The nicest line they had seemed to be the Howard Miller, the detailing is exquisite.
Nothing really says home to me like a grandfather clock, do you have anything that when you see it reminds you of home?
Product Review: 7 Minute Dynamic Baseball Warm-up
Jon Doyle from BaseballTrainingSecrets.com sent me a copy of his DVD “7 Minute Dynamic Baseball Warm-up”. (Yeah, yeah, I know Something about Mary fans, what happens if somebody puts out a 6 Minute Dynamic Baseball Warm-up video). That’s actually what caught my attention about the video.
Doyle had been advertising on our site for a long time via google adworks and I kept seeing the ad. It caught my attention. I am always looking for new and exciting warm-up routines and drills, so I decided to review this DVD. The package arrived in a padded envelope, a professional cover, and well designed artwork featuring a baseball on turf.
The video features Jon Doyle MCing and Giles Wiley and Mike Ranfone performing the stretches. The credits and number of commas after these guys names are impressive, they are obviously professionals with experience and training to back them.
The video is pretty much what you would expect. It is not a professionally produced product, it is done in a training facility with a standard video camera, but video quality isn’t what’s for sale, what is for sale is a stretching warm-up exercise, and there it delivers.
At times the video is hard to discern, one thing I wish they had done is used a remote microphone, but that can be forgiven based on the quality of content. The premise of the video is that dynamic stretching targeting those muscles most often used during baseball practice and games helps prevent injuries and strengthens the muscles most often used.
Doyle contends that “traditional” warm-ups of taking a lap around the field and doing a few basic stretches can actually prove harmful, he has a point. Followers of this blog will know that I am a huge opponent of any type of weight or strength training for those that have not reached puberty. This was beat into our heads by the strength and conditioning coach of the Washington Redskins when I lived in Virginia, this video borders on that so I don’t know that I would recommend it for younger ones. I think Doyle would agree.
For those in Juniors up, that have reached puberty, this is a great quick workout that won’t cut into your precious practice time. Another of my pet peeves about warm-ups is how much time they cut out of your limited practice time, this workout overcomes that challenge. For the younger kids, I would pick and choose a few of these workouts and incorporate them into a warm up that focuses more on muscle memory routines and motor skills, but for older kids, this is a very good warm up routine.
The video walks you through about nine stretches, my favorite of which is the “inch worm”, and then moves to hurdles. Rather than expensive hurdles, he chooses to use chairs, buckets or tees would work as well, the point isn’t the equipment, but the stretching out of the hips and hip-flexors. The duo ends with broomstick drills that focus on limbering up the upper body, especially the shoulders, vital for baseball and softball players.
I have heard both sides of the story, some say stretch before you run, some say run before you stretch. I prefer a light jog before stretching to get the blood flowing and the muscles loose. I recommend doing that before jumping into these extreme stretches to avoid pulling muscles. I have no medical expertise to base this on though and recommend you consult a professional.
All in all, this is a great video for kids beyond puberty, but stick to agility and motor skills warm-ups for younger kids. The main focus in the younger kids is fundamentals and muscle memory. Strength training can damage growth plates and stretching isn’t as important for muscles that have not yet developed.
What warm-ups do you do before practice and a game?

Update 10/17/08
Jon responded to my review and made some very good points in reference to the younger kids. Again, I am not the expert here, my opinion is based on experience and not research, I leave those things to the experts.
Here is what Jon said:
“I was surprised [sic], that [you] recommend it not be use for the younger guys. In fact, its perfect for them. If they can put their bodies through the stress of baseball, certainly this type of warm-up is safe and effective, from many angles. They are still developing overall body coordination and “balance” at this age. Most don’t realize this, but you cannot improve balance past puberty. You can improve your ability to right yourself in a specific skill, but not overall balance. The warm-up helps here.
Since the exercises are body weight, it will also increase strength & muscular endurance at that age. And since its not a lot of volume there’s little, if any, room for injury.
We have thousands of youth teams on the warm-up with nothing but great results.”
His point about the exercises being “body weight” seems to make sense. Quite frankly, I hadn’t considered that. I suppose that the training here is not so much “muscle” related as I initially thought. Also, the point he makes about balance is very true and relates directly to my agility point.
Again, I recommend purchasing 7 Minute Warm-up and incorporating it into your workout routines.

I will admit that I am guilty of not sending cards, not sending thank you notes, and not doing the things that all good people should do. But there is no excuse any more for not sending Christmas Cards because they are easy to order from The Gallery Collection.

Direct from the publisher pricing makes this an inexpensive marketing tool that must not be overlooked.
But that’s not all! According to a Press Release found on their site they have donated $10,000 to the Soldiers’ Angels military support program Project Valour-IT. Project Valour-IT purchases adaptive laptops for severly wounded service members aiding in the physical and psychological recover of these military men and women. A noble cause for sure!

Sports Uniform Stuff
A place where anyone and everyone can discuss Team Sports Uniforms, Baseball Uniforms, Basketball Uniforms, Cheerleading Uniforms, Field Hockey Uniforms, Football Uniforms,
Lacrosse Uniforms, Soccer Uniforms, Softball Uniforms, Track
Uniforms, Cross Country Uniforms , Volleyball Uniforms,
Wrestling….
I think you get the picture.
This is how “Sports Uniform Guy” the founder of the blog (catchy name here) The Sports Uniform Guy describes his site. I have to admit, I didn’t realize there was so much to talk about concerning sports uniforms, but apparently their is!
All of us have to purchase uniforms for our league and all of us are intimately familiar with the process. I think this is akin to being strapped down and having my toenails extracted one-by-one, but the Sports Uniform Guy (Love that name) makes uniforms interesting and exciting!
He is actually a pretty cool guy, with a fantastic perspective considering that fact that he is old and (holding my nose) an EAGLES FAN!!!! UGGGGHHHH…But at least he is a true Philadelphian, so he is true to his home team and I respect him for that. It could be worse, he could be a Cowboys fan! Oh yeah, didn’t the Redskins just spank the Cowboys and the Eagles in consecutive weeks in their own stadiums??? But I digress as I am still basking in their glory.
All kidding aside, (yeah right) when I logged onto his site today Sports Uniform Guy I was met with smiling and casually vivacious future Vice President Sarah Palin. How great is it going to be to watch her stand up and sit down and stand up and sit down and stand up and sit down during McCain’s state of the union speeches! I am looking forward to that! Again, I digress!!! I am bad tonight.
Anyway, all kidding aside (and I mean it this time), I have had the pleasure of conversing via email with The Sports Uniform Guy and he seems to be both knowledgeable and service oriented. A quick perusal of his site supports my first impressions of him.
He mixes current events such as a controversial cheerleader uniform for the University of Idaho, with serious content such as the latest fashions in the basketball world. He takes hard line stands on throwback uniforms after seeing those horrible Jets uniforms a couple of weeks ago, and has light fodder such as Uniform Spelling Snafus. He seems to cover all the bases and keep a very dull subject, Sports Uniforms, light and entertaining, as well as informative.
Take a look and let me know what you think.
The Hug
Sunday Shopping Spree
Sunday I was rushing through the grocery story picking up items from a list for my son’s birthday party . I happened upon a kid I coached years ago shopping w/ his mom. I bumped him gently w/ my cart and he turned around startled. Then he got a huge smile on his face! I reached out to give him pounds as I often do, and he ran up and gave me a huge hug !
The Effect
That was awesome! We need to always remember the effect we have on these kids. The ironic part of this equation is that he was a little bit of a trouble kid. I could have easily dismissed him and treated him differently, but I treated him sternly, as I would have any other kid with a propensity to misbehave.
Discipline
There were a couple of times he was made to go back to the dugout in rookies all by himself as the others played on the field. This could would have every reason to dislike me. But did he? No, he ran to give me a hug!
Think they don’t want discipline?
Do you have a story of a child that made your day? Please share it.
