My Grandfather’s Grandfather Clock
I have always loved grandfather clocks. As a child I remember the one that sat in our living room. It was built by Dee-Daddy, my grandfather, in his wood shop. Every hour on the hour it would chime and ever so often we had to go in and wind it up. It had a big heavy pendulum and the effort he put into the detail showed the love he had for our family.
Today I discovered this Grandfather Clock online and it reminded me of home. My father passed just after Christmas last year so I have been thinking of him a lot lately. This clock resembles the one we had so it got me thinking of home again.
All this reminising got me thinking about how cool grandfather clocks are and I came across this blog post about shopping for grandfather clocks w/ your grandfather. It said some of the same things I felt about the subject, my grandfather had to love the things because he made one for each of his children and then a few more after that, never for sale though.
It seems that all of these sites are tied together and part of 1-800-4CLOCKS.com. It is a great site with everything clocks. Did you know that they have atomic grandfather clocks now? That’s progress! No more winding! The nicest line they had seemed to be the Howard Miller, the detailing is exquisite.
Nothing really says home to me like a grandfather clock, do you have anything that when you see it reminds you of home?
I am going to Win $6,000 for YSSG
I received my paperwork back from the state today about my articles of incorporation for the Youth Sports Support Group. I forgot to add the “Inc.” at the end so I have to resubmit :<. Oh well, that frees me up to spend thanksgiving w/ my family.
But, John Chow is holding a new contest to give away $6,000 in CASH! $5,000 would go to the charity of your choice and $1,000 will go to you to spend however you want. If I win, I would give the $5K to The Youth Sports Support Group, of course, and I would put the $1,000 into the charity as well.
The contest is being sponsored by XR.com. XR.com is a tiny url service that shortens your URL. Have a long URL? Go there and see how short they can make it! Sign up for an account and check it out!

Time to Plan for Next Year
Now that the season is over, take this week off and enjoy Thanksgiving w/ your family! Then, start planning for next year! Ask yourself, what is the one thing I can do to make my league or team better next year? Then start working towards making that happen. If every coach and board member across the world did that can you imagine how much progress would occur? The power of numbers if phenomenal!
What is the one thing you will do to make your league better? (Firing me is not an option!…lol)

Last Space Shuttle Night Launch
Took the family over to Port Orange, FL to watch the space shuttle launch tonight. Even though we were 30 miles north or so, it still lit up the sky. It is an amazing thing!

Off to See the Family!
Image by Getty Images via Daylife Now that all the tournaments are over and we have set records in our concession stands we are off to visit family! Experienced Little League parents know to plan their vacations in late July and early August, so that is what we do. I hope to continue posting up there, but I cannot make any promises. Please don’t hate on me if I miss a day.
This trip might be a little awkward as well. It is the first time our family has gotten together since our father died around Christmas. In fact, that was the last time we were all together. It is also pretty much the first time I can remember that he won’t be there. There had to be other times when he wasn’t there, but I can’t remember them.
This is something we will skate around all weekend, but I know it will be in the forefront of everyone’s mind. We lost my sister’s husband last year as well, so neither of them will be there. Times are changing, the kids are older and some don’t attend anymore, the second generation of kids and grand kids have begun to grow up and everything is a bit different now when we get together. I guess that is how life works. Either way, I will have fun.
So, the next time I post it will likely be from the car on I-95. Waive is you see me!

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo
Today I actually canceled softball practice and took a day off work to spend with my family! Amazing eh?
We spent the day at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo and a fun time was had by all!
The zoo was OK, but I have to admit, being a native Virginian, I am spoiled by the Washington National Zoo. This zoo was what you would expect, plus maybe a bit more. It seems every time you go to a zoo, the animals seem very lazy. I guess this is their nature, but I had hoped the Orangutans and Chimpanzees, my personal favorites, would have been more active.
The funniest part of the day was when they fed the Orangutans. They had a baby in there and the female was the baby’s aunt. They fed them in a snack box, just as you and I would have. Threw it right to them and they caught it! Better than some of my players I might add!
Anyway, the first box the aunt willingly shared w/ the baby. The second box though, she snuck off and took a piece of paper and put it over her head while she ate it! It was hilarious! Very much like the bird sticking their head in the sand, her whole body was still exposed! Needless to say, it didn’t take long for the baby to find her and she begrudgingly shared.
The zoo had seven areas including an Asian and African area, manatee areas and a children’s play zone. In one area you can actually feed sting rays! Felt like a sucking feeling when they took the food from you.
They had typical animals you would find in any zoo including sloths, pigs, white tigers, monkeys, frogs, snakes etc. They had a few shows but each of them included too much talking and not enough focus on the animals.

Is that the ugliest fish you have ever seen in your life????

The only real downside of the zoo was the absolutely rude and horrible service we received when purchasing ice cream from the Grub and Grog restaurant found in the children’s portion of the zoo. Also, I wonder what they are trying to achieve? They are way to close to Orlando and right next to Busch Gardens to compete on the ride level, yet they have a water play area, a small banana ride, a carousel, and an air ride. In addition, they are building a flume ride.
I wonder if they want to be a zoo or an amusement park? I think they may not know themselves.
We dropped about $86 for tickets and every ride cost us even more in tokens! All in all, I would say we left about $200 behind so it was a bit pricey for what we got, but the kids had fun, I got to spend time w/ the family and everyone left with smiles on their faces! And isn’t that all that really matters?
Do you have a favorite Zoo story? Please share it! I will give a free month’s ad to anyone that tells me the trick taught to the Ape in the National Zoo by the bad people. Do you know what it is?
