    Get the Word Out!

    Last night we had our monthly board meeting and the focus turned to the fall season. (Yes, we took off a whole 24 hours before starting to work on the fall!). Tonight, I began designing the flier, or at least updating last year’s flier w/ this year’s information, (why reinvent the wheel right?) and it occurred to me the amount of marketing we actually do!

    For a league to be successful you MUST get the word out. This is a multi-level adventure. Not terribly difficult or time consuming, but very important.

    1. Contact Existing Players

    We do this on a number of levels. Here is what it involves:

    A. Mail fliers to existing player’s families announcing the registration
    B. Make a bulk call using dialmycalls.com
    C. Send out an email blast

    2. Get Them in the Schools

    It is crucial to get them into the schools that serve your league. In our county, we have to get the flyer approved beforehand, insert a disclaimer clause, and sort them into groups of 25 for each classroom. Every school district will be different, but don’t let the bureaucracy discourage you! It is vital to get them into the classroom and home in the backpacks.

    3. Use Local Media Outlets

    I work for a local newspaper for my day job. We NEED local information to fill our pages! We NEED your league’s information and will gladly publish it for you! We might even trade you an ad for a sign on your field! We are not unique, every local media outlet will likely do this. Contact them ALL! Get them your information and let them help you spread the word. This means newspapers, radio stations , television stations everyone. Prepare a press release using the template in word and email it to their addresses that you can find on their websites. It is just that simple.

    4. Get Your City/County Support

    We are blessed to have the BEST city support on the planet! Take advantage of any support you can get from your community. Our city runs a blurb in their newsletter, posts the dates on their website, puts up signs for us at the parks, puts signs on the street side announcement boards at the firehouse and city hall, and allows us to put sniper signs up around town. Get the city involved! Let them help you as much as they are willing to do.

    5. Let the Community Help

    Last, but not least, we go around to all the businesses and put fliers on their counters, in their windows, and put sniper signs on their property if they will let us. They are often more than willing to help and sometimes you will find sponsorship leads from these efforts.

    Whatever you do, don’t simply hold registrations and expect people to show up. The fact is, you need to market the league as you would your company. That’s what it is after all, so take pride in your program and go spread the word!

    Entrecard is one of the best forums I use to drive traffic to my site. Entrecard is one of the most powerful ways to spread the word about your blog because of its unique format. Basically, you insert a small snippet of code onto your site, people advertise on it and pay w/ "entrecard credits" and you use those credits to purchase ads on other’s sites.

    The kicker? You get 1 credit for each entrecard site that you "drop" your card onto. You can see mine over on the right hand sidebar. Where the word "drop" is, if you were an entrecard member, you would get one credit for clicking that button.
